Container math for chairs: cube, cartons and loadability
Chairs are bulky and light, which means you are not really buying chairs by the piece — you are buying cubic metres of ocean and filling them well or badly. Packing efficiency moves your landed cost more than any discount you will ever negotiate.

The one physical fact that drives everything
Chairs cube out. A 40-foot high-cube container is rated to carry roughly 26 tonnes, and a container of chairs will never get near it — the box fills up on volume long before weight matters. That single fact, confirmed on every chair load our own operations have planned out of Anji, sets the economics of the category: ocean freight is effectively priced per cubic metre of your cargo, so the cost per chair is the container cost divided by how many chairs you fit. Halve the cube per chair and you have halved the freight per chair, which on budget seating is frequently a bigger lever than the FOB price itself.
It also explains behaviour that confuses new buyers. Factory MOQs at 30/50/100 pieces are carton-and-layer arithmetic (see the MOQ guide); quotes change when you change the carton; and a chair $2 cheaper that packs worse can absolutely cost more landed. Always compare quotes per container, not per piece.
Know your box: paper CBM versus loadable CBM
The standard boxes, by internal dimensions: a 20-foot GP runs about 33 cubic metres nominal, a 40-foot GP about 67, and the 40-foot high-cube (40HQ) — the default booking for chairs on the main lanes, since the extra height costs little and suits stacked cartons — about 76 nominal. Treat the nominal figure as fiction for planning. Cartons do not tessellate perfectly, mixed sizes leave voids, dunnage and bracing take space, and the last metre at the door is hard to fill safely. Generic guidance for clean uniform cartons allows up to the low-to-mid 60s of CBM in a 40HQ; for real chair loads with mixed cartons, we plan against 54–60 usable CBM, and the 85–90% rule of the nominal figure is the generic ceiling.
A supplier who quotes you the theoretical maximum carton count is not lying so much as ignoring dunnage and the door gap — but the difference lands on your invoice at destination when twenty cartons come back off the plan. A realistic loading plan under-promises. Ask for the load plan with the quote, and ask which CBM figure it was computed against.

The numbers by chair type — and why KD changes everything
From our own container programmes and the carton specs that cross this desk: an assembled office chair — base and cylinder fitted — loads at roughly 250 to 350 units per 40HQ depending on the model. An assembled swivel chair is mostly air arranged around a star base. Ship the same chair knocked down (KD), as flat rectangular cartons the customer assembles, and the count roughly doubles; the freight per chair roughly halves; and the trade-off arrives at the other end as end-customer assembly, support tickets, and the occasional stripped screw. For generic planning before you hold a carton spec, 0.2–0.3 CBM per KD office chair is the published band, which lands in the same 200–340 range.
Simple KD seating goes further: stackable stools and basic side chairs in dense flat cartons run 0.05–0.06 CBM per unit — comfortably over a thousand pieces in a 40HQ. Nesting plastic chairs are a palletisation problem instead: a 40-foot floor takes around 20–24 standard pallets, and the chairs-per-pallet figure is set by how tightly the model nests. On one worked example from our cluster’s programmes, improving the nest from 60 to 75 chairs per pallet put roughly 330 more chairs in the same box — a 20% freight-per-chair cut from a stacking geometry change, no negotiation involved. At the other extreme, assembled sofas load by the few dozen sets, which is why mixed loads — dense KD chair cartons packed into the voids of a bulky sofa load, heavy cartons low — are standard practice for raising a container’s value.
Every figure above is carton-dependent. Never promise yourself (or your customer) a per-container count without the actual carton spec — length, width, height, units per carton — in hand. It is the first document to request after the price.
LCL or FCL: the break-even, in chairs
Below a full container, you ship LCL — your cartons share a box with strangers’ cargo — and pay by volume. The industry rule of thumb puts the LCL/FCL break-even around 15 CBM: below roughly 13, LCL is nearly always cheaper; from about 15 up, a full 20-footer progressively wins; the band moves with the lane because LCL pricing carries heavy destination charges (deconsolidation, CFS fees) on top of the per-CBM rate. Treat 15 as folklore-grade — corroborated across forwarder guides, not a carrier tariff.
Translate it into chairs and the decision usually makes itself: at 0.2–0.3 CBM per KD office chair, 15 CBM is only 50 to 75 chairs. A sample-plus-trial order ships LCL; anything resembling a retail programme belongs in its own container. The non-price factors lean the same way — LCL means more handling events (forklifts touching your cartons at origin CFS, deconsolidation, re-loading), which for chair cartons means more damage exposure, and consolidation adds days each end. If you do ship LCL, the packing spec matters more, not less: this is the lane where the damage-claims guide stops being theoretical. And in every case, get the freight quote before falling in love with the FOB price — buyers repeatedly report discovering that shipping on a small chair order equals or exceeds the goods, which is not a scam, just geometry they met too late.

Does chair weight ever limit a container load?
Practically never. A 40HQ is rated around 26 tonnes and chairs hit the volume ceiling long before the scale moves — which is exactly why all chair freight thinking is volume thinking: cube per chair, cartons per layer, usable CBM. Weight only enters the picture for dense component cargo like boxed gas lifts or castings.
