Office chairs: sourcing guide & manufacturers

“Office chair” on a sourcing platform is not one product. The same search returns a $6 stacking visitor chair, a mesh task chair, a mainstream swivel with a gas lift and tilt mechanism, and a PU-leather high-back executive model — and sellers tag all of them with the same handful of adjectives: modern, ergonomic, commercial, wholesale. Before comparing prices, decide which of three buckets you are in: fixed-frame visitor and conference seating, mid-market swivel task chairs, or executive and boss chairs.

Under the upholstery, most swivel office chairs are the same kit of parts: a five-star base in nylon or aluminum, a gas lift, a tilt or synchro mechanism, castors, armrests, and a seat-and-back set in mesh, fabric or PU leather. That matters for buyers because two chairs that look identical in a photo can differ entirely in cylinder class, base material and foam — which is exactly where cheap quotes save their money.

What sellers advertise: price and MOQ bands

In listing data we sampled mid-2026 (first-page listings on Made-in-China and Alibaba — advertised, seller-claimed FOB-style prices, not verified quotes), the bulk of office chair ranges ran US$20–66 per piece. Within that, budget mesh task chairs clustered at $20–38, mainstream swivels at $40–56, and better executive models at $57–66 and up. The floor was around $6 for basic visitor chairs; premium claims ran $97–165+ on first pages, with outliers far higher.

Treat the 1–2-piece minimums on listing cards as a display artifact — marketplaces push low MOQs to attract sample orders. Production-real signals on the same pages pointed to 50–300 pieces for office and ergonomic chairs. The $2–8 teaser listings exist too; they are bait pricing, not a price you will be quoted at volume.

Which regions make them

In the listing metadata we sampled, Foshan (Guangdong) dominated office chair supply by a wide margin — 140 mentions on a single Made-in-China results page against 9 for Anji. The Anji–Huzhou–Hangzhou belt in Zhejiang came second and skews toward swivel and mesh task chairs, with Hebei and Tianjin supplying the budget metal end. These are mention counts in listing pages, not a census — but the split is consistent across both platforms we sampled.

Anji itself is a chair town in the literal sense: according to Xinhua, citing local government data, the county’s factories make one in every three chairs produced in China and half of those exported, with chair manufacturing output of 31.19 billion yuan in 2024. What to check before you order

• Pull the gas lift paperwork — The cylinder is the one component that can actually hurt someone, and the explosion question comes up constantly among buyers. Ask for the cylinder maker’s name and a current SGS or TUV test report — not a badge on the listing page.
• Treat BIFMA and EN 1335 as claims until you see the certificate — Listing badges are routinely decorative; buyers have matched a seller’s actual BIFMA certificate PDF against the current model and found the design had changed since testing. Get the certificate, check the model number and the date.
• Close the sample-to-bulk gap in writing — Importers report bulk shipments where only a fraction of goods resembled the listing photos. Approve a golden sample, write the spec (cylinder class, base material, foam density, fabric weight) into the contract, and tie final payment to inspection against it.
• Quote at your real quantity — The price next to a 2-piece MOQ tells you nothing. Ask for a quote at the volume you will actually order, with packaging and loading port stated, before comparing factories.
