Chair components: sourcing guide & manufacturers
Every swivel chair is five components in a trench coat. Buying the parts — or knowing who made the parts in your finished chairs — is its own discipline.
The components trade covers gas lifts (cylinders), tilt and synchro mechanisms, five-star bases in nylon or aluminum, castors, armrests, mesh and upholstery materials, and moulded foam. Buyers come to it from two directions: assemblers and repair operations buying parts as the product, and finished-chair importers who learn — usually after a cylinder or mechanism failure — that the component maker behind their chair supplier matters as much as the supplier itself.
Within a cluster like Anji, components are the connective tissue: chair factories, cylinder makers, base moulders and mesh weavers supply each other within a few kilometres. Several factories in our directory both build finished chairs and sell parts lines, which is typical of how the cluster actually works.
A note on prices — and why we are not quoting a band
Our mid-2026 marketplace sampling covered finished chairs, not parts, so we will not publish a component price band we did not collect — per-part pricing is spec-driven (cylinder class, base diameter and material, mechanism type) and a single “components” number would be fiction. What we can say from the finished-chair data: the premium tiers in office and ergonomic listings are largely component upgrades — aluminum bases, 4D armrests, better mechanisms — so the parts are where chair price tiers actually come from.
Expect parts to move in carton and pallet quantities, and treat any marketplace 1–2-piece minimum with the same scepticism as elsewhere: display artifact first, factory MOQ later.
Where the parts ecosystem sits
The trade-fair view (CIFF, the Guangzhou fair organiser) names Guangdong, Zhejiang and Hebei as China’s key furniture manufacturing regions, and the component trade shadows the finished-chair clusters: swivel-chair parts concentrate where swivel chairs are built. For the Anji cluster, Xinhua — citing local government data — reports 1,700+ enterprises in the county’s chair-and-home industry and a 180+-company industrial park; that enterprise count is mostly not final assemblers, it is the supply web of parts and materials around them.
Attribution matters here as everywhere: those are state-media-reported government figures, not audited counts. But they match what you see on the ground and in the directory — a third of our listed makers carry component lines.
What to check when buying parts
- Treat gas lifts as the safety-critical purchase they are — Cylinder failure is the fear that haunts chair buyers’ forums, and unverifiable certification labels make it worse. Buy lifts with a stated class, from a named cylinder maker, with a current SGS or TUV test report for the batch — and keep the report.
- Confirm fit with drawings and a fitted sample — Mechanism plate hole patterns, cylinder taper seats and base bore sizes mostly follow common conventions — mostly. Exchange drawings, then assemble one complete chair from your actual parts before approving production.
- Trace the maker behind your finished chairs — If you import finished seating, ask your factory which cylinder and mechanism brands go into your spec, and write them into the contract. Silent component substitution is the cheapest way for a supplier to widen margin on a repeat order.
- Put material specs in numbers — Nylon base claims should state glass-fibre percentage; aluminum parts, the alloy and finish; castors, the wheel material and load rating. Component quality lives entirely in these numbers.
- Plan spares continuity — Buyers have caught certificates issued for designs that had since changed. Parts revisions break replacement-fit the same way — agree that your spec is frozen, and that revisions require notice.
